Sonnets have a fixed rhythm and rhyme scheme that is followed precisely. The Petrarchan sonnet uses one octave (8 lines) and one sestet (6 lines). An English sonnet uses three quatrains (4 lines) and one couplet (two lines). The last part of a sonnet offers a solution, a reaction, or a conclusion to the first part. Sonnets present personal feelings and thoughts about life. Common subjects are love, grief, and relationships.
